Spinning Hope and Happiness During Pandemic: a Playlist

One of my favorite aspects of leading indoor cycling (spinning) classes is choosing music and arranging playlists. I like to create themes to make the class fun and cohesive.

While feeling fairly low and sad about current events I realized I needed a hopeful and happy theme to lift my spirit and encourage my clients.

Do you use music to boost your mood?

It’s amazing how quickly my attitude can shift when I listen to positive messages set to upbeat tunes.

According to this Time article, studies have shown that music certainly can affect the brain to enhance your mood and fend off depression. It can also lower stress hormones and ease pain. Listening to mood boosting music benefits the mind like meditation.

However, it matters what kind of music you consume. If you listen to tunes that produce stress, it can cause anxiety and a negative mental state. Listening to AC/DC can be calming to some and aggravating to others.

I’m sharing this playlist of positive hope-filled and happy tunes in case they may strike a chord with you.

The beat of each song is important, but lyrics also matter. After the playlist I’ll share some words from each song that resonate and encourage positive thought.

The Playlist

The Songs

I Got You (I Feel Good)

I feel good. I knew that I would.”

That’s PMA (positive mental attitude) right there.

Come As You Are

“Everybody’s always overthinkin’ whatever everybody else is thinkin.’
All you gotta do is bring what you got.
‘Cause this elevator only goes up.”

Be who you are. We’re all just making things up as we go.

Stayin Alive

“Feel the city breakin’ and everybody shakin’.
And we’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive
Got the wings of heaven on my shoes.
I’m a dancin’ man and I just can’t lose.”

How can you not groove to this disco beat? It’s also an anthem of resiliency.

Better Day Comin’

“I know there’s a better day comin
the sun’s gonna rise out of the darkest night.
It’s gonna change everything.”

This song was featured on the trailer for Tom Hanks’ 2019 movie, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and it’s packed with hope for better days in the future.

Something Great

“I heard my name.
Someone calling out through my pain.
Something deep inside that said I don’t have to fall.
Instead, I can be something great.”

Our past does not define our future. Get curious about your greatness and reach for your dreams.

Look for the Good

“Look for the good in everything.
Look for the people who will set your soul free.
It always seems impossible until it’s done
Look for the good in everyone.”

Some have called this reggae groove “good vibe escapism,” but it brings a lightheartedness that’s helpful during dark days. Jason Mraz is donating profits from this album to Black Lives Matter movement.

Gotta Be Patient

Michael Bublé teamed up with Barenaked Ladies and Mexican artist Sofia Reyes on a new version of this song originally written by Spanish musical group Stay Homas while in quarantine. Proceeds from the song are going to COVID-19 relief charities.

“ I just wanna feel your love
’cause Instagram is not enough for me.
So I gotta be patient.
Let’s enjoy this confination.”

I don’t know how much I enjoy confinement, but this little ditty makes me smile and reminds me to be patient and to stay hopeful.

Let’s Work Together

“Together we stand, divided we fall. Come on now people, let’s get on the ball and work together.”

Fifty years after this rock hit released, it is still very relevant. Despite discouraging daily news, I continue to have hope for humanity to work together to create positive change.

“Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do”

Even if you’re not feeling happy when you start listening to this song, it will make you more cheerful just listening.

I Lived

Hope if everybody runs
You choose to stay
I saw so many places, the things that I did
Yeah with every broken bone
I swear I lived”

Live life to the fullest, even when it hurts. This kind of grit, doing hard things and overcoming obstacles gives me a victoriously happy hopeful outlook.

[caution: explicit lyrics]

“I feel glorious, glorious
Got a chance to start again
I was born for this, born for this
It’s who I am, how could I forget?
I made it through the darkest part of the night
And now I see the sunrise
Now I feel glorious, glorious
I feel glorious, glorious”

Again, overcoming feels glorious!

Good Feeling

Yeah I got a brand new spirit,
Speak it and it’s done
Rolled up on the side of the bed like I won
Talk like a winner, my chest to that sun.”

Display a proud and positive posture and your attitude is likely to follow.

Mr. Blue Sky

Sun is shinin’ in the sky
There ain’t a cloud in sight
“It’s stopped rainin’ everybody’s in the play
And don’t you know
It’s a beautiful new day,hey hey.”

As Walt Whitman said, “Keep your face always toward the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind you.”

O-o-h Child

Ooh child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh child
Things’ll get brighter.”

Here’s another song from 1970 with hope for the future. I understand that merely saying things are going to get better doesn’t make it so. But I do believe that our thoughts influence our actions, and I also believe and hope things are going to get better–if not in this world, in the next (heaven).

What about you? Where does your hope come from?

What other songs would you include?
